A symbol of national rebirth and strength

The Jan Hus Memorial was designed by Ladislav Šaloun and it was unveiled in 1915, 500 years after Jan Hus’ martyrdom, who was burned at the stake in 1415 for propagating the idea that the Catholic mass should be given in the vernacular, rather than in Latin.

The Jan Hus Memorial symbolizes the strength of the the Czech Republic against oppressive regimes. The beautiful monument was paid for solely by public donations.
