Founded by Benigna Kateřina Lobkowicz in 1626, the Loreta is a Baroque place of pilgrimage designed as a replica of the legendary Santa Casa in the Holy Land. As the Turks were advancing on Nazareth, legend has it that the original Santa Casa was carried away to Italy's Loreto by angels. While replicas of the Santa Casa can be found throughout Catholic Europe (50 in the Czech lands alone), the one in Prague is particularly special.
