Description
Modern art Behemoth
This masterful functionalist 1929 building, which once made le Corbusier jealous, is a fitting home for the Czech Republic's continually reorganised and redefined modern art collection.
It was drafted into cultural service only in 1995 but features a grand 19th-century collection, ranging from Karel Purkynê's closely observed painting, to the symbolist art of Max Vabinsk and Franti Ek Bílek. Some 2,300 exhibits include Czech cubists, surrealists and social art and works by Toyen and Jind, along with Stalin-era socialist realism.
