Description
The Old Jewish Cemetery is a somber reminder of Europe's Jewish history. Established in the early 15th century, it is the continent's oldest surviving Jewish graveyard. After being unused for more than two centuries (since 1787), the cemetery still exudes a sense of sorrow. Here, 12,000 decrepit tombstones, some brought from other long-gone cemeteries, are stacked chaotically. It is estimated that the cemetery contains up to 100,000 graves, many layered due to the tight confines.
